European Roulette Rules

The basic premise of European Roulette is the same as its American counterpart. The big thing you'll see right away is that their is a 0 on the board and no 00. This gives the house much less of an advantage than American Roulette. Any non-zero bets in either version of roulette will lose if a zero comes up. Because the casino only has one chance at this instead of two, that means that there are a lot better odds playing European Roulette.

So, the object is to correctly bet the ball will land on a number. Your bets will consist of certain parameters that you have bet on. Instead of 38 total numbers on the wheel there is only 37. So here are the types of bets that you can bet on:

  1. Bet a particular number - pretty easy, just put a chip on a number - 35 to 1 payout
  2. Bet a combination of numbers - there are many different ways this can be done.

Let's start out small with the two number bet which you place on a line between two numbers (17 to 1 payout). Place a bet on the edge of a row and you can bet on the three numbers in the row (11 to 1 payout). You can bet four numbers by putting a chip where the four corners of those numbers meet (8 to 1 payout). Placing a bet on the edge overlapping two rows will allow you to bet on six numbers (5 to 1 payout).

  3. Betting on a block of numbers - here are those examples:

There are two ways to bet 12 numbers. The first is by betting one of the three columns. The other method is by betting on 1st (1-12), 2nd (13-24) or 3rd 12 (25-36). Both of these bets payout 2 to 1.

Then you have the 1 to 1 bets. These include Even or Odd bets, Black or Red bets, and First 18 or Last 18 bets.

So far everything is the same as American Roulette except the number of places.

Announce Bets

You may have been wondering what the heck that racetrack is doing next to the grid of numbers. These are called the Announce or Call bets. The way these work in a live casino is that you announce that you want to bet a a number or space within the oval to the dealer. The dealer will then place bets on the corresponding places on the board. The software will do this for you automatically.

If you are playing above, hover over each number in the out arc. You will see a series of numbers light up on the number grid. Placing a chip on the number in the arc will place a chip on those five numbers.

Is there some kind of pattern to numbers going around that circle?

Yes, what you are looking at is the numbers side by side as they appear on the roulette wheel. A bet on any of the numbers will bet on the surrounding four numbers on the wheel.

What's the deal with the middle of the circle?

Voisins du Zero or Neighbor of Zero - This is going to place seven bets for you. These seven bets will cover 17 different numbers from the number 22 at the top of arc through to the number 25 (the numbers are neighboring zero).

Tiers du Cylindre or the Third - Betting here will place bets on six different spots on the grid. The bets will cover 12 (one third) of the numbers from the number 27 to number 33 on the circle.

Orphans - They got left out of the other two bets. This includes the 6, 34 and 17 on one end and the 1, 20, 14, 31 and 9 at the other end of the oval. Five bets will be placed to cover these 8 numbers.

What's the payout for these bets? It varies a lot. Most of these bets are placed on a line between two numbers. Hitting that would give you 17 to 1 odds. There is a three number combo in Voisins that will hit 11 to 1 and a four number combo that will win you 8 to 1. In the Orphans bet, there is a bet placed on the number 1 alone and the number 17 is covered by two bets, both paying out 35 to 1 odds.

What do you win on a bet overall? Let's give you an example. Say you bet $1 a bet on Voisins and the number 25 comes up. You won $8 on that bet and you losing six losing bets cost $6 overall so you won a $2. That payout is not much better than betting on Black or Red. If the number 3 came up, you would win $11 on that bet and profit $5 (little better than 1.5 to 1 payout) on the bet and if the ball lands on 7, you win $17 and profit $11 or about a 2.5 to 1 payout.

If you bet $1 a bet on Tiers and any number hits, you win $17 on the bet and lost $5 from the losing bets so you win $12. This is equivalent to winning a 2 to 1 bet.

In Orphans, if a 17 to 1 odds hits, you win $17 and lose $4 from your lost bets. This is a payout of 2.6 to 1. If the ball lands on 1, you win $35 and lose $4, so the payout is 6.2 to 1. If it lands on 17, you win $35 and only lose $3, paying out 6.4 to 1.
